Stores Closed on Thanksgiving Day 2021

In the last few years, many retailers have rolled out their Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving Day, the day before the actual Black Friday. This year, the holiday will be on November 25th. Given the changes brought forth by the pandemic, it seems like many retailers will be closed on this day this year as well.

However, this is not entirely caused by the COVID-19 pandemic since several retailers kept their stores closed on Thanksgiving Day even before the pandemic broke out. The reason behind their decision was to allow retailers and their associates to get their stores ready for Black Friday or their employees to spend the evening with their families.

While we’re still waiting for updates and announcements from major retailers regarding this year’s Thanksgiving, here is a list of stores that have officially announced that they will keep their stores closed on Thanksgiving 2021.

ABT Electronics

In case you’re a regular shopper at this retailer, you probably already know that it typically keeps its stores closed on Thanksgiving. This year is no exception, so it will keep its doors closed on this day.

Academy Sports + Outdoors

Those who are regular shoppers at this store will most probably not find this news surprising as the retailer was closed not only in 2020 but also in previous years. Academy Sports + Outdoors announced on its website that it would be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Plus, it let its customers know about its working hours on Black Friday. So all those interested in the products available at this retailer will be able to shop from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m. on the big Friday.

Bed Bath & Beyond

Just like last year, Bed Bath & Beyond will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. According to a statement made by the retailer earlier this year, the decision to keep its stores closed on November 25th was made “so that Associates can be with friends and family during the important holiday.”

Belk

The list of stores that will be closed on Thanksgiving Day has been extended, as Belk has recently announced that it will keep its stores closed on the said day. However, deals will be available online, and the stores will reopen on Black Friday at 7 a.m. Moreover, this year, Black Friday deals start earlier, namely on November 19th, lasting through November 27th.

Best Buy

While Best Buy kept its stores open on Thanksgiving Day in the previous years, last year it did the opposite and, according to the information available on their website, its stores will be closed this year as well. However, those interested in saving and shopping at this retailer can do so online on November 25th. Best Buy will open its stores on Black Friday, but there will be some limits regarding the number of people shopping in-store.

BJ’s Wholesale Club

Those who often shop at BJ’s Wholesale Club will probably not find it surprising that the retailer will have its stores closed this year as well. This is an old tradition when it comes to BJ’s Wholesale Club, as it has done the same for the last 14 years, with 2021 being the 15th one to find its stores closed on this holiday.

Boscov’s

Boscov’s is also among the retailers that announced to be closed on Thanksgiving Day. According to chairman and CEO Jim Boscov, the stores will be closed to allow “co-workers the ability to enjoy an uninterrupted Thanksgiving Day with their families.”

Costco

The fact that Costco will be closed on Thanksgiving Day doesn’t come as a surprise since the retailer kept its stores closed in previous years and does so for most major holidays. Details regarding its Black Friday working hours are not available yet, but it doesn’t typically open too early on the big Friday.

Dick’s Sporting Goods

While it opened its stores on Thanksgiving Day in previous years, Dick’s Sporting Goods closed them last year, and it will do the same this year. Both its stores and distribution centers will be closed on November 25th, but they will be open on “Black Friday (Nov. 26) to serve customers with in-store, curbside contactless pickup, and BOPIS options.”

Foot Locker

Just like in 2021, Foot Locker will close its stores and warehouses on Thanksgiving Day. The retailer made this decision in order to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of its team members. According to the information available at this moment, the retailer will open its stores on Black Friday between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. local time.

JCPenney

The fact that JCPenney will keep its stores closed on Thanksgiving Day may not come as a surprise as the retailer did the same last year. It has recently confirmed that it will be closed once again on Thanksgiving for 2021. However, stores will reopen on Black Friday at 5 am.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s announced that it would keep its stores closed earlier this year, more precisely in July, saying that this decision was influenced by the “positive response from last year’s closure on Thanksgiving Day” as well as by the new shopping trends and preferences.

Macy’s

The retailer has announced in a press release on October 25th that it will keep its stores closed on this year’s Thanksgiving Day. It has also announced its Black Friday hours, and its stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m on the big sale day.

However, if you want to shop for early Black Friday deals, you can do so from the beginning of November as the retailer will roll out early deals on November 3rd. All Black Friday deals will be available online between November 23rd and November 27th.

Petco

If you often shop for your various needs at Petco, learn that you will be able to do so only online on Thanksgiving Day. The retailer has confirmed that its stores will be closed on the said day but they will open on Black Friday, with opening hours varying from one location to another. Early deals will be available, such as 20% off online orders of $50 or more, with this deal going to 25% from November 26th through December 4th.

REI

In 2020, REI kept its stores closed not only on Thanksgiving but also on Black Friday and will do the same this year. So, all of its stores, distribution centers, call centers, and locations will be closed as part of its #OptOutside movement though which the retailer wants to encourage its employees to spend time with their dear ones.

Sam’s Club

Sam’s Club has joined the list of the stores that will keep their doors closed on this year’s Thanksgiving Day. However, its Thanks-Savings deals will be live online on November 25th. The retailer announced its Black Friday day hours, and its stores will open at 10 a.m. for regular shoppers and at 8 a.m. for Plus members.

Staples

Staples will also be closed on this year’s Thanksgiving Day, opening its stores, though, the next day, on November 26th at 7 am.

Target

Target confirmed that it would keep its stores closed in 2021 at the beginning of this year, saying that “guests loved our new approach so much that we’ve already decided to carry one change forward.”

Tractor Supply

Tractor Supply has released its Black Friday ad in which it is mentioned that it will keep its stores closed on Thanksgiving Day. However, it will open them at 6 AM, Friday, November 27th.

Walmart

In order to thank its employees for all their hard work, Walmart announced that it would keep its stores closed. However, it also announced that it would offer early Black Friday deals throughout November, so those of you interested in saving before Black Friday can do so during these early sales.

We’re still waiting for other retailers to confirm whether they’ll close their stores on Thanksgiving Day, so stay tuned as we will update this page. In 2020, the following retailers were closed on this holiday, so chances are that they will do the same in 2021.
